Dress Shopping

On Saturday my mom and I are going shopping for my wedding dress.

I'm actually slightly dreading it. I remember my sister went shopping for hers, and since I'm going to the same place I imagine the experience will be the same. It was a bunch of women milling around in a highly pastel place, with chirpy salespeople and loud mothers and things that cost about five times more than they should. At least my sister had her dress all picked out already - I'm gonna have to go hunt for mine.

This is, of course, preferable to what I witnessed when my friend Erica went shopping our our bridesmaid dresses. There were occasionally women who were in the shop looking for bridal gowns when we were there, and they stood on a little platform in front of a three-way mirror while everyone ooh'ed and ahh'ed.

I don't want ooh's and ahh's. I don't want to be the center of attention.

I don't even know what size I am, for cripes' sake.

Maybe it'll be more fun than I'm anticipating. Maybe dressing up in all that stuff will be different than I'm thinking it will be.

Of course, the most fun of all would be showing up at the church in this. If it wasn't for my very real fear that Mike's mom would have a heart attack, I'd be tempted to try it.

you know, if you were to postpone your wedding to november, you could get some really nice dresses on sale since their "style" will be passe. that's how i managed to spend only $40 on mine :D of course, it was also the simplest of the dresses there and i had to lose 10 pounds to get into nearer to the wedding date, but hey, it was only $40. i spent $79 on my shoes.

I was dragged along for a wedding dress shopping trip once. It happened that one of my very bestest friends was getting married, and in addition to her mother and sister, she wanted a male opinion, so I was volunteered. based on my single datapoint and otherwise total lack of expertise in these matters, please allow me to interject with my humble two cents.
I think your pragmatism will suit you well in your search, and I wish you the best of luck. And if you do get the oohs and ahhs, remind yourself that they're appreciative and envious. Pick the one that gets the most of both, after all, if you only get to wear it once, you might as well have one that makes you look damn good, right? I can't really comment on the alternative dress you suggested because, well, it'd just be wrong, what with you getting married and all. If you did wear that though, it'd pretty much be the best. wedding. evar. Indellibly memorable I say.

Ohhh.. the little patent leather one is cute, though Im afriad of how the folk might whipser when you kneel at the alter, you know?

I still have my wedding dress. I keep it as a testament that I did once actually wear a size with a single number.

What's your taste? Vintage, or Timeless classic, or Funky and fluffy with lots of tulle, or something in between? If I could do it over again, I would choose something completely different, but then again, that was nearly 12 years ago. Of course my taste has changed.

I hope you share some of the styles you're considering with us. I love looking at formal dresses of any kind.
