refoccusing (ha!)

A couple of people thought the FOCCUS process was weird.

It is.

But one question that came up was whether the couple was qualified to be doing this or whether they were just people off the street. Well, the answer is in the middle. They aren't counselors or pastors or anything like that, but they did attend a workshop and watch a video. So while they have some background, they aren't experts by any means.

I think that, like so many things, the quality of the experience depends on the people involved in it. My grandparents have done the FOCCUS thing zillions of times and they're good. They aren't professionals but they get the couples talking about the issues they disagree on. There's a lot of, "Don't talk to me, talk to her." They've even been toasted at receptions and gotten letters from happy couples. With these people, I dunno.

The quality of the experience depends on every participant, including myself. Which means that to get anything out of it I need to stop acting defensive and start taking it for what it's worth.

Even if it involves unicorn-riding yuppies.

Okay, okay, I'll stop.

  • A workshop and a video? That's how I got qualified to pierce ears at Walmart 13 years ago!

Professional ear piercer. I should add that to my resume.
