OB Appointment

Tonight I had another OB appointment. Mike came along for the first time so he could see where I spend an evening once a month, and so he could meet the doctor. It wasn't very exciting for him, but I felt better having him there.

The appointment was the usual stuff...they weighed me and took my blood pressure. Then the nurse let me go into the bathroom to give a urine sample. I'm getting to be an expert at peeing in a cup. When I was finished I was pleased that nothing had dribbled on the side. Nevertheless, I decided to wipe the sides with one of the antiseptic wipes they keep in the bathroom. I figured that the nurses who pick up the cups must wear gloves, but it would be nice to sanitize the cup anyway. I carefully placed the cup on the toilet paper dispenser, grabbed a wipe, opened it up, and swabbed the outside of the cup. Unfortunately when I tipped the cup to wipe the bottom I tipped it too much, and spilled my own urine on my pants.

Smooth.

Cursing, I set down the remainder of my sample so I could mop up my pants. I dabbed at it with the alcohol wipe, then with toilet paper. Finally I gave it up and went to the sink so I could use a wet paper towel. I wound up with a huge wet spot on the tummy panel of my pants. Next time I'll remember to put a lid on it first.

After that the doctor came in and informed me that I'd gained a little too much weight this month, and that although sometimes you do have a growth spurt in terms of your weight, I should really watch it from now on. I asked how much weight I gained.

Ten pounds.

Seriously, people. I didn't know it was even physically possible to gain ten pounds in a month. Although it happened in all three of my mom's pregnancies around this time, so I guess it runs in the family. Great. No wonder I've been feeling so sluggish lately...I've been carrying around an extra ten pounds! I can't even diet it off since Philo needs nutrients. Bah.

We also heard Philo's heartbeat, which sounded good. That made everything else worth it. She also informed me that according to my ultrasound my due date should be May 11th, which is much sooner than the date she gave me, May 21st. She's not going to change my official due date, but she thinks Philo will be here early. I hope not...I really want to get as close as humanly possible to finishing the school year before I leave.

Next month I get a shot of Rhogam and a glucose test. Joy. I read somewhere that they were studying how to do the glucose test with jellybeans instead of that orange drink, but they haven't gotten there yet. It's probably for the best...I don't need any more weight.

  • Glad to hear all is well. And I laughed just a little bit at spilling your own pee on yourself. ;-)

Oh, I've probably gained 10 pounds in a month myself. hahaha. No baby to blame it on though!

  • yay! i'm glad the appointment went well and that mike was there to hear the philo's heartbeat.

about the pounds...all you need to do is reduce your fat intake some and snack on healthy vegetables and fruit instead of buttered popcorn and potato chips. actually, not having gravy on your potatoes and veg can go a long way to helping to control the weight gain. so long as you're taking in enough nutrients you and the baby will be fine.
