Phones

Today Mike and I weren't able to drive to my parents' house for Christmas because of the snow, so we spent most of the day just hanging around our apartment. Little P spent the time crawling around trying to find new things to stick in his mouth. At one point he grabbed our cordless phone and started messing with it. I figured he couldn't possibly hurt it, so I let him play with it. He kept putting it up to his ear as if he was talking on it. I smiled, thinking that it was a cute coincidence.

This evening the snow cleared up so Mike and I went to a family gathering at my aunt and uncle's house. P has a toy cell phone that's shaped like our cordless phone. I let him play with it and in between chewing it and waving it around he kept putting it up to his ear. A few people in the room said it was unmistakable - he knew what the phone was for.

It's so weird. P makes speech sounds, looks at us, smiles at us, and will come over to us when he wants something. But this was the first behavior I've seen that seemed purely social. Talking on the phone can't be traced back to a survival mechanism, like coming to us, or an ancient way to bond, like smiling. This was something he saw Mike and I do, something we did with him every time one of his grandparents wanted to say hi to him over the phone, and so he did it too. By himself. At seven months of age.

It's sort of amazing when you think about it.

  • boy didn't start doing anything like movement until he was 8 months, around this time, actually. he was pushing himself backwards under furniture and such like. he was abour 9 months when he started crawling. he always was, though, a very social butterfly.

  • Kids mimic your good habits as well as your bad. One of the joys of parenting.
