Signs of the Times
Today Mike and I decided to start teaching P some sign language. Because he's such a budding genius.

He chews slippers at a fourth-grade level.
Seriously, though, he's a bright little guy and I've been concerned because his language development has stalled while he learns a new gross motor skill (standing without holding onto anything). So I thought I'd give his language skills a little kick in the butt.
Our friend Kathy loaned us a baby signing DVD, but you can't use it until the kid is 10 months old. P's too young but we tried it anyway, and while Mike and I obediently watched the tutorial little P chewed his toys and banged on our window. He didn't seem too interested.
I asked Mike to request another baby signing DVD from the library because I know some can be used at 6 months. In the meantime he decided to encourage signing his own way.
"I'm going to go take a shower," Mike said to P, fluttering his fingers and making a water-like sound. "Bloop-bloop-bloop-bloop."
P might end up signing yet.

You are looking at this the entirely wrong way. He's not late on developing langauge skills, but early in developing the physical skills and coordination needed to be a professional superstar athlete. I would ignore his language skills entirely and focus on coordination so he can compete in the big leagues once he gets to be four or so.

boy never babbled. he'd laugh when tickled, and he smiled a lot, but he didn't babble, not even when he was alone in his bed playing with his crib toys in the morning. when he was about 16 months old he named grover from sesame street so we knew he could technically talk, but that was it until he was nearly 2.5 years old when he held out his bowl and said, "more, please." (supper). after that there was no shutting the child up.
if philo's hearing is fine, chances are his speech will be fine too. it's hard to babble when you're chewing on everything in sight because the teeth are starting to come in. he's just being polite by not talking with his mouth full.
