Awhile ago my department head asked us to complete three paperwork tasks, and a few weeks ago at our department meeting she recognized the people who had completed the tasks by handing out Hershey's Kisses ("I'm going to give everyone who did the paperwork kisses of gratitude!"). She didn't give me any but I figured it was just an oversight.
This morning she dropped by my office to remind me to complete the paperwork.
"I did," I said, my eyes growing wide. "I did it weeks ago."
"Oh," she said, surprised.
"I can double-check," I said, "Maybe the website didn't process it correctly."
So after she left I checked. And, of course, the paperwork was done just as it should have been. She'd overlooked it. I sent her a quick email reassuring her that it had indeed been done.
I guess she felt that I deserved my reward, because this afternoon an envelope came in the interdepartmental mail. It contained a note that said, "Thanks for completing your paperwork!" and in the corner were two slightly squashed Hershey's Kisses.
Now, I was very groggy today from staying up too late last night watching Project Runway and waking up far too early. I just stood in the Teachers Center staring at those kisses and thinking about how weird it was that my boss sent me a food reward in the mail for doing my work. It just seemed...odd.
I ate them anyway. Hey, it's chocolate. You can't pass that up.
