Trashtastic
One of my favorite sayings is, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with." Okay, so maybe Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young were talking about having a one night stand, but I prefer to think of it as making the best of what's in your life.
Because I'm not in a position to get a house anytime soon and because there's not much more we can do to fix up our apartment, I've been thinking about refurnishing. If I cut back on my extra spending plus take the money I'm going to save by not driving to and from Illinois every day this summer, I could afford to buy a new piece every once in awhile.
So where does a middle-class twenty-something with an adequate paycheck and some extra cash go for furniture?
Yeah. Craigslist.
It makes me feel kind of white trash, but to tell the truth, Craigslist is pretty much in keeping with how I obtain furniture. Once I splurged and bought a couch on clearance, but that's pretty unusual. When I need something I usually start haunting thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales, and secondhand stores. It can take weeks or months for me to find the right thing, but I usually find something good for cheap.
My friends don't understand this. They think that since I'm a real adult with a real paycheck, I should buy things new. The thing is, I can either buy something new, of low to mid-quality, or I can buy something gently used of higher quality. It seems logical to get the most bang for my buck.
Then again, I've happily accepted gifts from Mike for Valentine's Day or my birthday that were from eBay, and I've gotten gifts from him there as well. So I guess I'm weird.
Anyway, I'm sure pictures will be forthcoming if I find anything good. And if anyone feels like hitting the thrift stores this summer, let me know. I'll be out there.
